Course Description: ED 327 is part of the Junior Block course work and is organized to provide the teacher candidate practice with INTASC and Indiana State standards, as well as develop and collect lessons, activities, and resources for effective social studies instruction. This course will concentrate on the most effective teaching methods, strategies, and materials to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate appropriate social studies instruction, keeping in mind the learning needs of children.

Course Objectives:

The teacher candidate will:

1. understand the major purposes for teaching social studies

2. learn the social science disciplines and their relationship to elementary social studies

3. understand the rationale of the different approaches for the organization of program curriculum development

4. become familiar with major social studies topics including
a. global education
b. multicultural education
c. environmental education
d. law-related education
e. gender-equity education
f. character/values education
g. current events
h. historical inconsistencies

5. understand the importance of planning curriculum to emphasize major ideas toward broad conceptualizations rather than memorization of segmented topics

6. become knowledgeable with the National Social Studies Standards, Indiana
State Standards, and individual school district curriculum

7. understand the connection and linkage of social studies content to reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition, the theory of multiple intelligences will be used to integrate lessons into the content areas like science, math, and health

8. understand typical types of groupings appropriate to social studies for student diversity

9. become familiar with instructional resources, materials, literature, technology, etc. to teach social studies

10. learn to analyze a variety of textbooks and material via appropriate selection techniques

11. learn about a variety of alternative assessments

12. become personally aware of and sensitive to multicultural and diverse issues of the student population in today’s classroom.
